What this lesson does
- Takes one common sales line, in general words — it is not about any particular company.
- Shows why it convinces people, and what it leaves unsaid.
- Gives you the questions to ask and the papers to see.
The claim
You may hear it as “Tax benefits” — in a brochure, a video or a sales call. Everyone would like to pay less tax, and the phrase sounds official.
What it leaves out
- Tax treatment of land depends on facts — where the land is, how it is used, how long you hold it and who you are.
- Some things said about land and tax apply only in particular situations, or not to land at all.
- A tax claim in a brochure is not advice given to you about your situation.
What to ask
- Which tax benefit exactly, under which provision, and does it apply to someone in my position?
- Has a chartered accountant confirmed this in writing for this scheme?
- What tax is payable when I sell?
Ask for the answers in writing. A clear written answer is worth more than a confident spoken one.
Papers to see
- The exact wording of the claim.
- Any written opinion the seller relies on.
When to bring in a professional
Before you pay. Always: take the claim to your own chartered accountant before it affects your decision.
