Test the Soil, Not the Story

Two plots on the same road can be worth very different amounts, and the difference is often invisible from the road. A soil report costs a few hundred rupees and settles arguments no photograph can.

Buyers inspect documents carefully and soil casually. That is backwards for anyone who intends to actually farm. A jamabandi tells you who holds the land; a soil report tells you what it can do.

What the numbers mean

Borewell water qualitySaline irrigation water will slowly salinise good soil. Test the water as well as the land.
The Sambhar and Nawa caution. Sambhar Lake is a saline environment, and salt-affected land occurs in patches through parts of the surrounding belt. Land there can look ordinary and still carry salinity that limits cultivation. If you are buying anywhere near the lake or the Nawa salt belt, treat an EC test as non-negotiable — and test the specific khasra you are buying, not the neighbour's field. How to take a sample that is actually worth testing

A careless sample produces a confident number that is wrong. This takes about twenty minutes.

  1. Walk a W across the plot and mark eight to ten spots. Avoid field edges, bunds, tracks, old manure heaps and anywhere water pools.
  2. Scrape away surface trash, then dig a small V to about 15 cm — root depth, not topsoil dust.
  3. Take a uniform slice from each spot and drop it all in one clean bucket.
  4. Mix thoroughly, spread it flat, quarter it, keep opposite quarters and discard the rest. Repeat until roughly 500 g remains.
  5. Air-dry in shade. Never in the sun and never on fertiliser sacks.
  6. Label with the khasra number, village, tehsil, date, depth and your contact. An unlabelled sample is a wasted trip.
  7. Sample problem patches separately. If part of the field looks or grows differently, that patch gets its own bag and its own label.
  8. Bag the water sample too if there is a borewell — a clean bottle, filled after running the pump for a few minutes.

Public

Soil Health Card & district labs

India's Soil Health Card scheme and state agriculture-department soil testing laboratories provide testing for farmers, typically at low or no cost. Availability, current fees and turnaround vary by district — confirm with your local Krishi Vigyan Kendra or district agriculture office.

Your district KVK is usually the most practical starting point, and staff can often help interpret the report in local crop terms.

NABL-accredited private labs

Faster turnaround and wider test panels for a fee. Ask whether the lab is NABL-accredited and exactly which parameters the quoted price includes.

Free tests from input sellers

A test offered free by someone who then sells you the remedy is a sales tool, not an independent result. Useful as a rough indication only.

Reading a report as a buyer

Separate the fixable from the structural. Nutrient shortfalls are a cost line — you buy inputs and move on. High salinity, very poor structure and bad irrigation water are structural: they change what the land can ever do, and they belong in your price negotiation, not your fertiliser budget.

Pair the soil report with the record. The jamabandi's किस्म भूमि classification — चाही (irrigated), बारानी (rain-fed), बंजड़ (uncultivable) — is the state's view of the land. Your soil report is the ground's view. When those two disagree, find out why before you pay.
