Definition

The number identifying an individual field or plot within a village, and the only reliable identifier a parcel has. Names are spelt several ways and shared by cousins, areas are quoted in whichever bigha suits the speaker, and boundaries are described by reference to neighbours who sold up years ago. The khasra number ties the parcel to the map, the jamabandi, the mutation register, the deed and any court record. Sub-numbers such as 219/2 denote subdivisions and describe a different parcel from the parent number.

The individual field or plot number. The unit by which land is identified for every purpose.

The plot-wise record and the number identifying an individual parcel within a village.
